The village with 900 residents will receive a 668 thousand Euro per year; in addition, dozens new jobs will be set up.The Spanish village Rasquera, situated in the North-East region of Catalonia, will earn money cultivating marijuana.
The municipal council’s plenary meeting passed by absolute majority a provision to provide municipality’s lands for cultivation of Cannabis to the Barcelona Association of Marijuana Consumers (ABCDA). Mr. Bernat Pellida, mayor of the village, announced the news to Europa Press, clarifying that the plants are designed for personal consumption of the members of the Associaltion, which has more than 5.000 associates.
With the approval of this plan, the municipality will receive EUR 1.336 million in two years and will be able to employ 40 people thus covering its deficit, which at present rubs the million and a half Euros.
The mayor qualified the result of the vote as “an absolute success”. He added that this initiative would suppose 650,000 Euros per year for the Municipality and would create dozens of new jobs. In addition, he announced that he saw the project as an exit opportunity of the serious economic crisis. The Mayor clarified that he intended to initiate an additional assembly with the participation of scientists, lawyers and doctors to explain to the inhabitants the project, named “Rasquera Local Public Enterprise for Research on Vegetable Varieties of Cannabis (Rrica).”
The project consists of renting agricultural areas of the municipality to the Barcelona Association of Marijuana Consumers (ABCDA) for the farming of cannabis, with the intention of supplying to more than 5000 associates of this smokers club.
